Registration is open for this month’s Young Eagles and Eagles flights with Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 301

Registration is open for this month’s Young Eagles and Eagles flights with Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 301.

Ages 8 to 17 can get a free airplane ride, and if a four-seater plane is available, parents and siblings can ride along too. A few adults (18 and older) who are looking into becoming a private pilot can also fly. The pilot provides a slightly longer flight, an explanation of what goes on in flight and detailed information on the road to a private pilot’s license.

Young Eagles ride in the front seat, wearing a headset to hear the radio transmissions, and MAY get to handle the controls. They receive a post-flight photo; a personal pilot’s logbook; free access to an online ground school worth $275; and reimbursement for the test fee if they take and pass the FAA private pilot’s exam.

Boy scouts earn the aviation merit badge, either by doing the worksheet requirements I specify ahead of time, or in a ground school class at the field following the flights.

Flyers will get their permission forms and flightline passes in the MANDATORY ground school at 6:45 Friday, Sept. 22 in Centennial. Flights begin at 8 on Saturday, Sept. 23, at Front Range Airport north of Watkins, with the last finishing up around 10:30. Merit badge class probably will wrap up about 1 p.m.

More details later, but for now you need to round up the names, unit numbers and return email addresses of those who would like to fly and submit them by email by Sunday the 17th to dreamwoodck@yahoo.com. Please list adult Eagles separately; parents who want to ride along are scheduled at the field. First come first served; anyone who is over the limit will go on a wait list. I will send out “boarding pass” info with final details on or about Monday the 18th.

Please note: this is NOT a BSA activity. EAA generously provides the flights as part of their national education program (more information at EAA.org).
